Should the US give up control of the Net?

For several weeks we have been reading in the news about the international community’s apprehension over the United States’ control of the Internet. The European Union announced that it had decided to end the US govenment’s control of the Internet by setting up a council, along with other governments around the world, to override American control vis-à-vis the United Nations.

The United States has adimatley opposed the idea of international governance. The United States government started the Internet and eventually opened it up internationally. Although, in theory governance was turned over to the Internet in 1998 by the Internet Coporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), a private corporation, the US Department of Commerce has oversight.
