From The Hill:
Ted Stevens, the longest-serving Senate Republican in history and patriarch of Alaska politics, was found guilty of felony charges for making false statements.
The verdict could spell the end of a 40-year Senate career for a man who rose to be one of the most dominant figures in the upper chamber and who helped transform Alaska in its 50 years of statehood. The verdict was reached after the jury deliberated since Wednesday and found the 84-year-old senator guilty of failing to report more than $250,000 in gifts from Bill Allen, the former head of Veco Corp., and other friends.
The jury did not seem to buy the explanation from Stevens that Allen showered him with gifts he didn’t want and was unaware of, and that he believed the $160,000 he gave to another contractor covered all costs for the home renovations.

Fairly or not, the current economic meltdown has been the death knell for laissez-faire thought. Any attempt in the coming decades to put forward old fashioned economic libertarianism will be a tough sell. Note John McCain’s and Sarah Palin’s idiotic shouts of “socialism” and “Obama wants to ‘spread the wealth’” falling on deaf ears. Nobody cares!

Slate had an interesting article by Jacob Weisberg, “The End of Libertarianism.” Weisberg writes,
The libertarian apologetics fall wildly short of providing any convincing explanation for what went wrong. The argument as a whole is reminiscent of wearying dorm-room debates that took place circa 1989 about whether the fall of the Soviet bloc demonstrated the failure of communism. Academic Marxists were never going to be convinced that anything that happened in the real world could invalidate their belief system. Utopians of the right, libertarians are just as convinced that their ideas have yet to be tried, and that they would work beautifully if we could only just have a do-over of human history. Like all true ideologues, they find a way to interpret mounting evidence of error as proof that they were right all along.

And we have this at Daily Kos regarding Greenspan’s repudiation of everything he has been working at for the last 40 years.

This should help put one more nail in the coffin of the 20th Century music distribution model. The final numbers are in on Radiohead’s giveway of their latest album “In Rainbows” and it looks good with sales outpacing their penultimate and final big-label album “Hail to the Thief.”

Music Ally reports “In Raibows” selling 1.75 million copies of the physical CD, 100.000 box sets, and 30,000 units on iTunes in the US in the first week of availability. The album was number 1 in both the UK and US for the first three months; it was played 17 million times on Last.FM, and even to this day it’s in the top 200 UK & US as far as sales of the physical CD go.
Granted, Radiohead’s audience may not be the typical fan base, but I think this helps move the industry along toward a better open, free 21st Centry distribution paradigm.

It’s a well known fact, the perfect time for bar staff to offer a new drink to their customers is when their glass is almost empty. So to help bar owners who have a surface table inside their establishment, Microsoft is currently working on experimental “Surfaceware” that can detect how much liquid remains inside customers’ glasses, getting them drunk, and emptying their wallet, faster than ever.

Here is a sampling of the commentary from the vile right-wing fringe who troll Fox News’ website in response to the news that Senator Obama will be visiting his sick grandmother in Hawaii this week:

What a bunch of c*ap. Another sympathy move by Omamma to garner votes. Next there’ll be a mock funeral for “grandma” a day or two before the election. The old biddy’s probably been dead for years.

Well isn’t this convenient. I guess his grandmother is suddenly useful again once he starts slipping in the polls.

Obama is such a loser it is hard to feel anything but distain for him and his. He “divorced” his mother and her parents for a long time. It has been only lately that it is to his benefit to act like his gives a s$%^&t about any of the white family. Wonder where old Michelle is? Last I heard she was lunching on Lobster and chugging champagne while her husband was listening to poor people beg for money. Sick. just plain sick.

If his grandmother is sick, I pray she will recover quickly. However, I can’t help but wonder if this sudden trip to Hawaii has anything to do with a lawsuit that was filed today in Honolulu, Hawaii by Andy Martin requesting his birth certificate. It does seem odd that all of a sudden he is making a trip to Hawaii.

If Obama’s grandmother is truly sick I pray for her to recover but for those who are looking down their self righteous noses in disdain at suspicion over Obama’s visit to Hawaii, need to look at the facts. Take your rose colored glasses off and ask if she truly is that ill, why not get on his private jet tonight??? I would and so would you….Secondly, ask yourself why his wife Michelle is not going. Come on….Thirdly, why not take the great grandkids???? That would be the “normal”thing to do but then Obama doesn’t do things normally, does he???? I am very interested in this suit in Hawaii and it seems very suspicious that he is going THIS week….You see, when you lie and cover up you always have to watch your back or as the good Book states; Be sure your sins will find you out…. Lastly, can’t recall hearing anything about his grandmother since he has been on the campaign trail. If she was sick, wouldn’t we have heard something??? If she is truly sick, I pray for her to recover…..But…..

“Typical white women”…always getting sick when it’s convenient.
by danfromva8271 Virginia [Oct 20, 2008 9:31:38 PM]
Hey jpaul211, call it yucky and immature if you want, I don’t believe there is ANYTHING that Obama does that ISN’T politically motivated. This is the same woman he found convenient to publicly humiliate and call a racist when he deemed necessary. This is a carefully calculated ploy to soften his public image in light of recent events. I really hope I’m wrong, but there isn’t anything I know about this man which would lead me to believe otherwise. I stand by my comment, I think its right on the mark.

Is this the White Grandmother that he trashed in his books ? Then he praises his dead beat Black Fathr who deserted him and knocked up 3 other women. Gotta spread that seed Barry Sr said !!! Get lost Obama – we can see right thru You !!!!!

Ah, so the anti-Christ has relatives still breathing…or maybe he is just renewing judicial efforts to block any and all information about his past from reaching the public.

Remember the GOP convention last month?  They did this whole presentation about Theodore Roosevelt.  McCain is fond of quoting Roosevelt’s “big stick” line and has on a number of occasions called himself a “Roosevelt Republican.”
McCain’s recent attacks on Obama for wanting to “spread the wealth” and Palin’s and other wingnut right-wingers to scare everyone into thinking Obama is the re-incarnation of Stalin reminded me of McCain’s fondness for Roosevelt.  See, by modern right’s standards, Roosevelt himself was a socialist of a more extreme stripe than Senator Obama.
To wit, here are a few gems from the 26th President of the United States…
As a matter of personal conviction, and without pretending to discuss the details or formulate the system, I feel that we shall ultimately have to consider the adoption of some such scheme as that of a progressive tax on all fortunes…

and how about…

The man of great wealth owes a peculiar obligation to the State, because he derives special advantages from the mere existence of government.

and this one…

The inheritance tax . . . is both a far better method of taxation, and far more important for the purpose of having the fortunes of the country bear in proportion to their increase in size a corresponding increase and burden of taxation.

I wish the right-wing drones would get a clue, maybe pick up a history book and stop livng their lives in constant fear.

From the Times …
“He’s neither-nor,” said Ricky Thompson, a pipe fitter who works at a factory north of Mobile, while standing in the parking lot of a Wal-Mart store just north of here. “He’s other. It’s in the Bible. Come as one. Don’t create other breeds.”

Without Ricky, where would McCain be?
