I cannot emphasize enough how today’s Supreme Court decision, Citizens United v. FEC, has completely undermined what shreds of democracy were left and has formally confirmed what we have had for years anyway, a corporatist kleptocracy. This ruling puts a severe roadblock in the way of reclaiming our country for We the People.
This is serous stuff, folks. It’s time for all of Americans to step up and become part of a serious populist movement to take over both political parties. We need a movement… something bigger than any one politician or political party. This change isn’t going to come from the top. It is clear now that Obama is not a movement president. Change has to come from We the People.
Citizens United v. FEC must be undone and there are only two routes available to do this, a subsequent Supreme Court ruling or a constitutional amendment. We can forget the first option. Roberts and his cohorts are detestable corporate whores and until there is a real court remake, which can take generations, we can cross this option off the list. A constitutional amendment is the only course available to We the People.
The constitution provides two methods of amendment. The first requires Congress to pass the amendment by two-thirds majority in both houses and then be ratified by three-fourths of the state legislatures or state conventions elected for this purpose. The second method requires two-thirds of the states to have Congress call a constitutional convention whose acts must subsequently be ratified by three-fourths of the state legislatures or state conventions elected for this purpose. Although either method may seem insurmountable, this is the only option we have. We must put pressure on both Congres and our state legislatures for this is our only hope. There is a petition you should fill out at http://movetoamend.org.
We progressives should join with folks on the right who share this sentiment. There are many many folks in Tea Party groups who are on our side on this issue. Let’s reach out and join with people of good will to get this done.
Let Citizens United be a rallying cry. Countrymen, let’s take our country back for We the People.
