A Texan's map of Texas

I dearly love the state of Texas, but I consider that a harmless perversion on my part, and discuss it only with consenting adults.

David Frum opines on the strategic error of Congressional Republicans in their all-or-nothing obstructionist stance on health care reform.

Conservatives and Republicans today suffered their most crushing legislative defeat since the 1960s.It’s hard to exaggerate the magnitude of the disaster. Conservatives may cheer themselves that they’ll compensate for today’s expected vote with a big win in the November 2010 elections. But:

(1) It’s a good bet that conservatives are over-optimistic about November – by then the economy will have improved and the immediate goodies in the healthcare bill will be reaching key voting blocs.

(2) So what? Legislative majorities come and go. This healthcare bill is forever. A win in November is very poor compensation for this debacle now.

So far, I think a lot of conservatives will agree with me. Now comes the hard lesson.

I have previously blogged on this guy in Kansas, David Bawden, who claims to be the true Pope of the Catholic Church.  You might remember Thomas Frank devoted a chapter to Bawden in his excellent book What’s the Matter with Kansas?

Up-and-coming filmmaker Adam Fairholm is nearing completion of a feature-length documentary about Bawden, who lives in Delia, Kansas with his mother and a seminarian.  Fairholm produced a short documentary on Bawden as a class project three years ago and he decided to take the subject and enlarge it into a feature-length film.

Bawden is an interesting case study in the consequences of the overtly binary mentality characteristic of right-wingers.

Here is Fairholm’s original 10-minute documentary from 2007:

Here is the just released trailer for the upcoming feature-length film:

You know those scary lesbians, how dare they want to go to the prom just being themselves.  Well that’s how a Louisiana school feels after they canceled the senior prom because student Constance McMillen threatened to wear a tuxedo and bring a girl as her date. The horrors!

A generous New Orleans hotelier Sean Cummings has come to save the day.  Outraged by these dopey reactionary school administrators, Cummings has offered to bus the kids to the Big Easy and host the prom at one of his hotels.  I bet these kids will have one hell of a night to remember and I’m sure this will beat the school-sponsored prom they would have had.  McMillen, first reviled by her classmates for provoking the cancellation, will now be a hero. Funny how things work out sometimes.

Check this. Korean researchers have discovered a way to create alcoholic drinks that reduce hangovers without weakening the drink.  How? By adding oxygen bubbles to the liquor

When you drink ethanol, you body needs to oxidize it to water and carbon dioxide in order to process it. This occurs via hepatic oxidation, where the liver does its thing to counteract the liquor you’ve just poured down your gullet. The enzymes that process alcohol require oxygen to function, and it’s thought that by storing the oxygen in the alcohol itself, the system functions more quickly and efficiently.
