I figure if you have to stick a human being with a label to wear the rest of his or her life, you should tread lightly.

New Zealand’s Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages is cracking the whip on names like Lucifer, Messiah, General, Baron, Bishop, Duke, General, Judge, Justice, King, Knight, Mr., 89, 4real, C, D, I and T. Yes, these are names that parents in New Zealand have actually given to their kids.

International Business Times reports,

The agency banned names involving asterisks, commas, periods and other punctuation marks.

The new regulations may be a response to the attention the country received in 2008 for allowing names such as Benson and Hedges for a set of twins, as well as Violence and Number 16 Bus Shelter.

The remote island nation is not the first to institute strict laws for naming. In Sweden, name choices are subject to a naming law. So far, the committee has had the duty of rejecting such names as Superman, Metallica and Elvis as well the name Brfxxccxxmnpcccclllmmnprxvclmnckssqlbb11116 (pronounced Albin, of course).

This mousey little man — one-time perennial presidential candidate who couldn’t utter a single sentence without mentioning the mythologized Ronald Reagan, a la Giuliani and 9/11 — heads American Values, which is really just a self-promo website.

On Monday, ol’Gary wrote a piece for Human Events taking on libertarian Republicans who support marriage equality. He argues that gay marriage is a threat to liberties and provides these examples,

Recently, Frank Turek, an employee for computer networking firm Cisco Systems, was fired for authoring a book titled “Correct, not Politically Correct: How Same-Sex Marriage Hurts Everyone.” Turek had a stellar work record and never talked about his religious or political views on the job.

But after a homosexual manager at Cisco Googled Turek’s name, learned about his views and complained to a human resources professional at Cisco, Turek was immediately fired.

Also recently, Canadian sportscaster Damian Goddard was fired for declaring his opposition to gay marriage. Rogers Communications fired Goddard after he tweeted his support for Todd Reynolds, a hockey agent, who had earlier voiced his opposition to the activism of Sean Avery, a New York Rangers player who was part of the New Yorkers for Marriage Equality campaign in the lead-up to the same-sex marriage vote in the New York State Legislature.

“I completely and wholeheartedly support Todd Reynolds and his support for the traditional and TRUE meaning of marriage,” the sportscaster wrote.

Goddard says he will file a complaint with the Canadian Human Rights Commission against his former employer. In a news release, Goddard said he was discriminated against for standing up for his Catholic beliefs. Goddard’s lawyer says that his fundamental right to freedom of speech and freedom of religion were violated when he was fired.

The problem with these examples is that they have absolutely nothing to do with gay marriage, at least not directly. The culture has changed and is continuing to change. As the culture confronts the reality that there are a lot of gays and lesbians all over the place, in our families, workplaces, schools, and in public life, the culture’s approach changes and the old irrational prejudices, once acceptable, become offensive. Bigoted idiocy supported by superstitious religiosity is hardly better. I must plainly say, such evidence renders the prejudicial notion even less valid. Legal same-sex marriage is a consequence of this cultural shift. The firings Bauer mentions are a result of the greater cultural shift and not of marriage equality per se. Bauer draws a false causal link.

Secondly, it is very much in line with the libertarian principles of freedom of association and rights to property that Cisco and Rogers Communications can fire Turek and Goddard. Libertarians wouldn’t deny the right of someone to start a business and hire employees who share his or her values. Conversely, libertarian principles would allow Bauer to also start a business and just hire Christian freaks who share his superstition. Either Bauer has no understanding of libertarian principles or was just thoughtfully lazy.

The Christofacists are freaking out. The greater culture is leaving them behind and they must cope with either embracing the cultural shift or bunkering up.
